TERPENES

Terpenes (/ˈtɜːrpn/) are a large and diverse class of organic compounds, produced by a variety of plants, particularly conifers,[1] and by some insects such as termites or swallowtail butterflies, which emit terpenes from their osmeteria. They often have a strong odor and may protect the plants that produce them by deterring herbivores and by attracting predators and parasites of herbivores.[2][3] The difference between terpenes and terpenoids is that terpenes are hydrocarbons, whereas terpenoids contain additional functional groups.

Terpenes and terpenoids are the primary constituents of the essential oils of many types of medicinal plants and flowers. Essential oils are used widely as fragrances in perfumery, and in medicine and alternative medicines such as aromatherapy. Synthetic variations and derivatives of natural terpenes and terpenoids also greatly expand the variety of aromas used in perfumery and flavors used in food additives. Vitamin A is a terpenoid.

Terpenes are also major constituents of Cannabis sativa plants, which contain at least 120 identified compounds.[6]

HEMP

Benefits:

  • Essential Amino Acids*
  • Improves Mental Function*
  • Anti-inflammatory Benefits*

Although cannabis as a drug and industrial hemp are both members of the species Cannabis sativa and contain the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), they are distinct strains with unique biochemical compositions and uses.[6] Hemp has lower concentrations of THC and higher concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD), which decreases or eliminates its psychoactive effects.[6] The legality of industrial hemp varies widely between countries. Some governments regulate the concentration of THC and permit hemp that is bred with an especially low THC content.

MANGOES

Benefits:

  • Natural Sweetener
  • Contains Myrcene
  • Contain over 20 different vitamins and minerals, helping to make them a superfood

In addition to sumptuous tropical flavor, mangos deliver a host of nutrients and make healthy eating a delightful sensory experience. The bark, leaves, skin and pit of the mango have been used in folk remedies for centuries. Interestingly, the consumption of fresh mango 45 minutes before inhaling cannabis will result in a faster onset and greater intensity of the psychoactive effects. This is because the myrcene in the fruit allows certain chemicals, such as THC, to cross the blood-brain barrier more easily. Myrcene has also been shown to increase the maximum saturation level of the endocannabinoid system’s CB1 receptor.

KANNA

Benefits:

  • Potentiates Cannabis*
  • Reduces Anxiety*
  • Elevates your Mood*

Kanna a wonderful herb facilitating bodily and mental relaxation. Sceletium stimulates the function of serotonin in the brain far better than L-Tryptophan, 5-Hydroxytryptophan, and Griffonia. What makes it superior to these agents is that it does not lead to drowsiness commonly experienced while using the precursors of serotonin.

All the medicines available to fight depression are either Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors or Serotonin-Dopamine Re-uptake Inhibitors. They work by developing serotonin in the brain, but it leads to unwanted side effects. The pharmacological action of Sceletium is as a Serotonin Releasing Agent combined with a bit of SSRI activity. The main advantage is that it does not have any unpleasant side effects that are seen with other antidepressants available in pharmacy stores.

MELATONIN

Benefits:

  • Relaxes Muscles*
  • Tranquilizing Effect*
  • Improves the Quality of Sleep*

Melatonin is a natural hormone made by your body’s pineal (pih-knee-uhl) gland. This is a pea-sized gland located just above the middle of the brain. During the day the pineal is inactive. When the sun goes down and darkness occurs, the pineal is “turned on” by the SCN and begins to actively produce melatonin, which is released into the blood. Usually, this occurs around 9 pm. As a result, melatonin levels in the blood rise sharply and you begin to feel less alert. Sleep becomes more inviting. Melatonin levels in the blood stay elevated for about 12 hours – all through the night – before the light of a new day when they fall back to low daytime levels by about 9 am. Daytime levels of melatonin are barely detectable.

QUERCETIN

Benefits:

  • Abundant in Antioxidants*
  • Nature-derived Flavonoid
  • Helps Reduce Pain*

One flavonoid in particular, quercetin, is found in a broad range of foods, from grape skins and red onions to green tea and tomatoes. Quercetin is attracting intense scientific interest for its unique anti-aging and immune-boosting activities.6 Several recent studies show that organisms exposed to high levels of quercetin live longer, healthier lives.6–12 Laboratory models of aging, ranging from simple yeasts and primitive worms to cultured human cells, demonstrate that quercetin alone produces up to a 60% increase in life span!6,8-12 In addition, quercetin has been found to be cancer chemopreventive as well as reduce allergic reactions, boost immunity, and protect the cardiovascular system.

L-THEANINE

Benefits:

  • Helps Relieve Stress*
  • Stimulates Memory*
  • Improves Cognition*

L-Theanine promotes relaxation without the drowsiness or negative side effects associated with other calming agents. L-Theanine also supports healthy cardiovascular function through this relaxing effect as well as its antioxidant properties.

L-theanine supplementation has also been shown to increase brain α-waves which are associated with reduced stress and anxiety. Increased α-waves are also associated with selective attention mechanisms and mental alertness. These altered wave functions are evidence that theanine has ‘relaxing and attention promoting’ properties. There’s also literature that reports increased theta wave function which is associated with learning and memory.

B6

Benefits:

  • Supports Brain Function*
  • Improves Mood*
  • Synthesis of Neurotransmitters*

Vitamin B6, also called pyridoxine, is a water-soluble nutrient that is part of the B vitamin family. B vitamins, including vitamin B6, help support adrenal function, help calm and maintain a healthy nervous system, and are necessary for key metabolic processes.

Vitamin B6 has several derivatives, including pyridoxal, pyridoxal 5-phosphate and pyridoxamine. These are all important compounds involved in numerous biological functions. Vitamin B6 is used by the body every single day since it plays a part in such major functions including movement, memory, energy expenditure and blood flow. Therefore, a vitamin B6 deficiency can show up in many different symptoms, some only temporary but others more serious.

Vitamin B6 helps the body to maintain a healthy nervous system, to make hemoglobin that carries oxygen in red blood cells throughout the body, to provide energy from the food that we eat, to balance blood sugar levels, to act as a natural pain treatment, to boost mood, and also to create antibodies that our immune system uses to protect us. Yes, it’s that vital.

5HTP

Benefits:

  • Mood Elevator*
  • Precursor to Serotonin*
  • Aids in Post-Party Recovery*

5-hydroxytriptan, better known as 5-HTP, is a supplement that some people use in an effort to support their mental health and immune system. 5-HTP has been used for a variety of conditions including anxiety, various sleep disorders, hyperactivity disorders, cerebellar ataxia, depression, primary fibromyalgia syndrome, and migraines.

5-HTP is a naturally-occurring chemical in the body and is a building block to serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that helps moderate the transmission of signals between nerve cells.

VALERIAN ROOT

Benefits:

  • Reduces Feeling of Anxiety*
  • Relieves Restlessness*
  • Increases Awareness*

Valerian is a popular alternative to prescription medications for sleep problems because it is considered to be both safe and gentle. Some studies show that it helps people fall asleep faster and feel that they have a better quality of sleep. Valerian is often combined with other sedating herbs, such as hops (Humulus lupulus) and lemon balm or lemongrass, to treat insomnia. In one study of postmenopausal women, a combination of valerian and lemon balm helped reduce symptoms of insomnia.

With a better night’s sleep, comes a more productive and awake day. This means a clearer mind and a stronger body.
